Frances Lichten’s German Octagonal Dish (1936) reflects the folk art traditions of Pennsylvania German communities, descendants of immigrants who brought European decorative forms into early American life. Through painted furniture, household objects, and crafted heirlooms, they carried cultural identity into everyday use.

The dish is engraved with stars, floral patterns, and the inscription “171T.” At its center, a tulip, a recurring motif in Pennsylvania German design  is often associated with faith and renewal.

Its eight-sided form sets it apart from standard tableware, suggesting it was valued beyond function, closer to a crest , a crafted emblem of pride and identity.
