The Last of the Buffalo is not only a painting of action, it is a record of loss.

In the 19th century, millions of bison roamed the Great Plains of America, sustaining Native American tribes with food, clothing, shelter, and meaning.

By the late 1800s, widespread hunting and government policy had reduced their numbers drastically, altering both the landscape and the lives that depended on it.

The painting holds this history within a single moment. The hunter raises his weapon as the horse rears, while the buffalo presses forward with equal force. Neither yields, and neither dominates.

What appears as a scene of action becomes a record of transition, where both hunter and buffalo were nearing disappearance from the land, their fates bound within the same moment.

Rudolf Ernst

An Austrian-born painter of the late 19th and early 20th century, known for his richly detailed Orientalist works. Drawing from his travels across Morocco, Egypt, and Turkey, he created composed scenes featuring intricate architecture, decorative surfaces, and symbolic figures.

His paintings blend precision with atmosphere, inviting viewers into spaces that feel both ornate and enigmatic, where form, setting, and presence come together to create a sense of quiet intrigue.
